I've has personal experience using a non profit in florida called Consumer Credit Management Services. I found that a non profit offers better customer service and no BS. When checking which company to use, make sure your first payment goes to your creditors and not to the company. I don't believe non profit are aloud to pocket the first payment anyways.

hey buddy, i had the same doubt till a couple of months back when my debt was piling up and i was so desperate to get help. First let me put forth the one big difference between a debt consolidation and a debt settlement. Debt consolidation works for the creditors whereas the debt settlement companies work with and for their customers. While i was doing research on both of them many suggested not to get into either of them because they will bind us in a time frame...but the fact is don't you feel safe when you know that you will be out of the debt burden in a relatively lesser time frame if you join a debt settlement company instead of struggling to clear them off which will take God knows how long??? I can suggest you a debt settlement company which worked with me through my journey to get the burden off my shoulders. http://www.debtfreeafterall.com
